The mission of the ELA Department of M.S. 390 is to develop students’ literacy skills and build a foundation for student success through middle and high school.

We have adopted the Expeditionary Learning Curriculum in our ELA courses along with strong use of technology to facilitate teaching and learning. Through this rigorous program, students are engaged in active and meaningful project-based learning expeditions where they explore real-world problems and challenges, learn how to take initiative and responsibility, build their confidence, solve problems, work in teams, communicate ideas, and manage themselves more effectively.

In reading, students interact with a variety of complex texts that enable them to acquire grade-level vocabulary, strengthen comprehension, deepen their critical thinking skills, and develop a passion for reading. Rich classroom discussions are the heart of our day-to-day interactions where students further strengthen their speaking and listening skills, allowing them to shape their thinking through the exposure of multiple perspectives from their peers. The writing component of the course intensifies students’ writing skills and exposes them to various genres of writing where published, research-based pieces are produced in every Module.
